What Is a Twinning Programme? Study in Malaysia, Graduate with a UK or US Degree
What Is a Twinning Programme?
A twinning programme is a formal academic partnership between a Malaysian university and a university in another country — typically the UK, USA, or Australia. Under this arrangement, you study part of your degree in Malaysia and the rest is credited toward a qualification from the overseas partner university.
In some cases, you graduate with degrees from both institutions. In others, you complete your full degree in Malaysia but receive a qualification that is jointly awarded or recognised by the overseas partner.
How Does It Work?
The most common structure is called a credit transfer arrangement:
- You complete 1–2 years of your degree at the Malaysian university
- Your credits are transferred and recognised by the overseas partner
- You either continue studying at the overseas campus, or complete the full degree in Malaysia under the partner's curriculum
- You graduate with a degree that carries the overseas university's recognition or branding
Some programmes are structured as 2+1 (2 years Malaysia, 1 year overseas) or 3+0 (full 3 years in Malaysia, overseas-recognised degree).
Why Does This Matter for Indonesian Students?
A degree with UK or US university recognition opens doors that a standard local degree may not — especially for students who want to work internationally, pursue postgraduate studies abroad, or enter industries that value globally recognised qualifications.
The major advantage: you get international-level recognition at Malaysian tuition rates. Studying in the UK directly can cost RM 150,000–250,000 for a bachelor's degree. A twinning programme in Malaysia can deliver equivalent recognition for a fraction of that cost.
Which Universities in Malaysia Offer Twinning Programmes?
Several of Scholvia's partner universities offer twinning programmes:
INTI International University & Colleges is one of Malaysia's most established providers of twinning programmes, with partnerships including universities in the UK and USA. Students can complete degrees that are jointly recognised by institutions such as Coventry University, University of Hertfordshire, and others.
SEGi University & Colleges also offers twinning pathways in selected programmes, allowing students to gain internationally recognised qualifications through its partner network.
Is a Twinning Degree Recognised in Indonesia?
Yes — degrees from accredited Malaysian universities are generally recognised by Indonesia's Ministry of Education (Kemendikbud) for professional and academic purposes, especially when the awarding institution is internationally accredited. We recommend verifying recognition for your specific programme before enrolling.
Is This the Right Path for You?
A twinning programme makes sense if:
- You want an internationally recognised degree without the full cost of studying overseas
- You prefer to study in a culturally familiar environment (Malaysia is close, halal-friendly, and Indonesian-community-rich)
- You plan to work internationally or pursue postgraduate studies abroad
- Your budget allows for Malaysian tuition but not full UK or US fees
