Malaysian Student Visa Guide for Indonesian Students

Before you can study in Malaysia, you'll need a Student Pass — the official visa for international students. The good news: if your documents are complete and your university handles the process correctly, approval is generally straightforward. Here's everything you need to know.

Important: The Student Pass application in Malaysia is managed through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services). Your university will submit the application on your behalf — you don't apply directly.

What Is a Student Pass?

A Student Pass (officially a Student Visa) allows international students to study in Malaysia for the duration of their program. It is tied to your university and your specific program — if you change universities or programs, a new application is required.

Required Documents

Your university will guide you through the exact requirements, but these are the standard documents for most Indonesian applicants:

  • Valid passport — minimum 18 months validity from the program start date
  • Offer letter from the Malaysian university (unconditional)
  • Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts
  • Recent passport-sized photographs (white background, specific size — university will advise)
  • Medical examination report from an EMGS-approved clinic
  • Police clearance certificate (SKCK) from Indonesia
  • Proof of financial capability (bank statement showing sufficient funds)
  • Personal bond/guarantee letter (some universities provide this)

The Application Process

  • Accept your university offer and pay the required deposit
  • Submit your supporting documents to your university's international office (or via your agent)
  • University submits your application to EMGS
  • Complete your medical examination at an EMGS-approved clinic in Indonesia
  • EMGS reviews your application and issues a Visa Approval Letter (VAL)
  • Travel to Malaysia and obtain your Student Pass sticker at the immigration counter
  • Report to your university and complete entry formalities

Processing Time

Student Pass applications typically take 4–8 weeks after all documents are submitted. It's important to start the process as early as possible — ideally 2–3 months before your intended intake date.

Common Reasons for Delay or Rejection

  • Incomplete or uncertified documents
  • Passport validity of less than 18 months
  • Medical examination not conducted at an approved clinic
  • Outstanding issues from previous visits to Malaysia
  • Discrepancies in personal information across documents

Tips for a Smooth Application

  • Start your SKCK (police clearance) early — it can take time to obtain
  • Renew your passport before applying if it has less than 24 months remaining
  • Use a registered agent like Scholvia — we track your application and flag issues early
  • Keep digital and physical copies of all submitted documents
  • Don't book flights until your VAL is confirmed
