The Malaysia Student Pass is the official residence permit required by all international students studying at Malaysian universities or colleges. Without it, you cannot legally stay in Malaysia during your studies.
What Is the Student Pass?
The Student Pass is different from a tourist visa. It is issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department specifically for international students and includes a Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) — meaning you can exit and re-enter Malaysia throughout your studies.
The process runs through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services), managed by Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education at educationmalaysia.gov.my.
Two Ways to Apply
1. Through your university (recommended)
Most Malaysian universities submit the Student Pass application on your behalf. You prepare the documents and hand them to the international office. This is simpler and reduces the risk of administrative errors.
2. Apply yourself via EMGS portal
Go to educationmalaysia.gov.my, create an account, upload documents, and pay fees.
Required Documents
- ✅ Valid passport — minimum 18 months validity from date of entry into Malaysia
- ✅ Official Offer Letter from a Malaysian university
- ✅ Academic certificates and transcripts
- ✅ Passport-sized photo (35mm × 45mm, white background)
- ✅ Proof of tuition fee payment (at least initial deposit)
- ✅ EMGS application form (completed online)
- ✅ Health insurance valid in Malaysia
Do You Need a Single Entry Visa (SEV)?
This depends on your nationality. After receiving your VAL (Visa Approval Letter) from EMGS:
- Some nationalities can enter Malaysia directly using the VAL alone
- Other nationalities must first obtain an SEV from the nearest Malaysian mission/embassy
Check the official EMGS SEV list at visa.educationmalaysia.gov.my/guidelines/sev-required-countries before booking your flight. Indonesian citizens are generally exempt; most other nationalities require an SEV.
Step-by-Step Process
After acceptance, pay the registration fee to confirm your enrolment. Your university needs this before starting the EMGS application.
Gather all required documents. Ensure your passport has at least 18 months validity from your intended entry date.
Your university submits your application via EMGS, or you apply directly. EMGS conducts an academic screening of your documents.
After documents are verified and approved, EMGS issues your VAL. This typically takes 4–6 weeks from the date all documents are uploaded.
If your nationality requires an SEV, apply at the nearest Malaysian Embassy using your VAL. Do not book flights before receiving SEV.
Travel to Malaysia with your VAL (and SEV if required). You must enter through KLIA or KLIA2.
Within 7 working days of arrival, undergo mandatory medical screening (X-ray + blood test) at an EMGS-registered clinic. Cost is borne by the student: approx. RM 150 – RM 250.
Your university submits your passport to the Immigration Department for Student Pass endorsement. This takes approximately 2–4 weeks.
After endorsement, you receive the i-Kad (international student ID card). Carry this at all times while in Malaysia.

Annual Renewal
Student Pass must be renewed every year. Requirements for renewal:
- Minimum CGPA 2.0
- Minimum 80% class attendance
- Valid passport
- No legal issues in Malaysia
