Pre-Departure Checklist for Studying in Malaysia

Leaving for university abroad involves considerably more than booking a flight and packing a suitcase. A single missed document can create serious problems on arrival.

Use this checklist as your preparation guide before departure day.

Essential Documents

This is the most important section. Do not travel without all of these.

Identity documents

• Valid passport with minimum 18 months validity from your date of entry into Malaysia
• Visa Approval Letter (VAL) from EMGS — print at least two copies
• Single Entry Visa (SEV) — required for Indonesian citizens, obtained at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta after receiving your VAL
• i-Kad, or confirmation that your i-Kad is being processed

Academic documents

• University Offer Letter (original plus photocopies)
• High school certificate (original plus photocopies)
• Academic transcript (original plus photocopies)
• English proficiency certificate (IELTS or TOEFL) if applicable

Financial documents

• Proof of tuition payment (university receipt)
• A debit or credit card that works in Malaysia
• Cash in Ringgit for immediate needs — at least RM 500

Health documents

• Health insurance valid in Malaysia (mandatory)
• International vaccination card if you have one

Store everything in two places: a physical folder in your carry-on bag, and scanned PDF copies in your email and cloud storage.

Administrative Preparation

Before departure, confirm:

• Your medical screening appointment with an EMGS panel clinic in your campus city — mandatory within seven working days of arrival
• Your accommodation is confirmed, whether campus dormitory or private rental
• How you will travel from KLIA or KLIA2 to your campus — Grab, KLIA Ekspres, or university pickup
• You have saved your university's emergency contact numbers
• Which Malaysian SIM card you will buy on arrival — Celcom, Maxis, Digi, or U Mobile

Financial Preparation

• Plan to open a local Malaysian bank account soon after arrival — CIMB, Maybank, and RHB accept students with a passport and university letter
• Prepare an emergency fund equivalent to two to three months of living costs — approximately RM 3,000 to RM 5,000
• Know how you will transfer money from home — Wise and Western Union are commonly used
• Check whether your home debit card works at Malaysian ATMs and what transaction fees apply

Packing Guidance

Bring from home

• Personal prescription medication — bring a three-month supply
• All original documents
• Power adaptor — Malaysia uses Type G plugs, which differ from Indonesian sockets
• Laptop and charger
• Clothing for a hot tropical climate
• At least two sets of formal clothing for presentations and campus events

Buy after arrival

• Toiletries — widely available at minimarkets
• Bedding and pillows — available at IKEA, Daiso, and local stores
• Basic cooking equipment if you will be in an apartment
• Home country food products — available at speciality stores in Kuala Lumpur

One Week Before Departure

• Confirm your Student Pass or VAL status is active
• Confirm your flight arrives at KLIA or KLIA2
• Share your flight details and Malaysian emergency contacts with family
• Download essential apps: Grab, Google Maps, WhatsApp
• Save Malaysia's emergency number: 999 for police, ambulance, and fire
• Check the weather forecast for your arrival period

First Days in Malaysia

• Report to your university's international office
• Register for your mandatory medical screening within seven working days
• Buy a Malaysian SIM card
• Open a local bank account
• Familiarise yourself with the area around campus — minimarkets, pharmacies, food outlets, and transport links
