Is IELTS Required to Study in Malaysia? Complete Guide 2026

What IELTS Measures

IELTS (International Language Testing System) assesses English ability across reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Two versions exist:

• IELTS Academic — for university study
• IELTS General Training — for immigration or work training

For studying in Malaysia, you need IELTS Academic. Scores are reported as bands from 1 to 9. A band of 5.5 indicates you can communicate adequately in English for basic academic purposes.

Minimum Scores for Malaysian Universities

For undergraduate programmes: typical requirement Band 5.5 – 6.0; competitive programmes such as Medicine and Law Band 6.0 – 6.5.

For postgraduate programmes: typical requirement Band 6.0 – 6.5; Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) minimum Band 6.0.

When IELTS Is Not Required

Many Malaysian private universities waive IELTS if you meet one of these conditions:

• Medium of Instruction letterIf your secondary school taught in English, many universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MoI) letter from your school as proof of English ability.
• Strong English gradesSome universities accept good English results on your school transcript.
• Internal English testSeveral universities offer an in-house English assessment during the application process as an IELTS alternative.
• English preparation programmeIf you do not meet requirements, many universities offer an English Preparation Programme (EPP) — intensive English study before your main programme begins.

Accepted Alternatives to IELTS

• TOEFL iBT: score 70 – 80 for undergraduate
• Duolingo English Test (DET): score 95 – 105, considerably cheaper and taken online
• Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency

Test Cost and Registration

IELTS in Indonesia costs approximately Rp 3,500,000 – Rp 4,000,000 per sitting. Register at British Council Indonesia or IDP Indonesia. Results remain valid for two years from the test date.

Preparation Advice

• Target Band 6.0 to keep the widest range of universities and programmes open
• Use free preparation materials from Cambridge English and British Council
• One to three months of focused preparation is typically sufficient
• If budget is constrained, Duolingo English Test costs around USD 65 and is accepted by many Malaysian universities

Conditional Offers

If you do not yet have an IELTS score when applying, many Malaysian universities issue a conditional offer — you are accepted on the condition that you submit your score before classes begin. This buys you time to prepare properly.
